Introducing the Elephant Bush, also known as Portulacaria afra, which is a fascinating and popular succulent garden plant native to South Africa. It belongs to the Portulacaceae family and is known for its unique appearance and easy-care requirements.

The elephant bush succulent gets its name from its resemblance to the foliage of an elephant's trunk. It is also commonly referred to as the dwarf jade plant, small leaf jade, miniature jade, elephant food, or the Spekboom. The name "Dwarf Jade Plant" comes from its small, jade-like leaves, while "Spekboom" is an Afrikaans term meaning "bacon tree" due to the plant's edible leaves that reportedly taste like bacon.

The elephant bush plant features small, round, and fleshy pale green leaves that store water, allowing your elephant bush plant to withstand drought conditions.

The trailing stems of the elephant bush plants are thick and red-hued, which gives them a unique and appealing appearance in hanging baskets.

When grown as a houseplant, the elephant bush typically reaches a height of 1 to 3 feet.

However, if planted outdoors in its native habitat, your Portulacaria afra can grow much larger, reaching heights of up to 20 feet. The elephant bush makes for an excellent bonsai due to its unique growth pattern and ability to withstand pruning. Its thick, fleshy leaves and sturdy branches give it a robust appearance, making it an ideal succulent for shaping into intricate bonsai designs.

The elephant bush flowers are small, star-shaped, and usually a light pink or lavender color. While the flowers are not the main attraction of this elephant bush succulent, they can add a touch of beauty when they bloom during the spring to late summer.

The elephant bush Portulacaria afra comes in various varieties, including a slow-growing variegated form Portulacaria afra variegata; a trailing growth bush Portulacaria afra prostrata; and a midstripe rainbow bush Portulacaria afra medio-picta, offers a diverse range of beauty in green spaces.

When and How to Water Your Elephant Bush

Like other drought-tolerant jade plants, your elephant bush succulent prefers a watering routine that allows the soil to dry out between waterings. Overwatering can harm the elephant bush plant and cause root rot.

In the summer, during the growing season, you should water elephant bush succulents once or twice a month when the soil is dry. A good rule of thumb is to water this elephant plant when the top 1-2 inches of soil feel dry to the touch. In the winter, during the dormant period,  you probably do not need to water them at all.

Remember, it's always better to underwater than to overwater the elephant bush plant. This resilient Portulacaria afra plant can tolerate drought conditions better than excessive moisture. So, keep an eye on the soil moisture and adjust your watering schedule accordingly.

Light Requirements - Where to Place Your Elephant Bush Plant

When growing the elephant bush indoors, it thrives in bright, indirect light. Place your elephant bush plant near a window where it can receive plenty of natural bright light, but make sure to avoid direct sunlight, especially during the hottest parts of the day.

If you notice the leaves turning yellow or getting scorched, it's a sign that the Portulacaria afra elephant bush is receiving too much direct sunlight. So, finding that sweet spot of bright, indirect light is key to keeping your elephant bush succulent plant happy indoors.

If you decide to grow your elephant bush outdoors, it loves basking in the full sun. Although partial shade in the afternoon is frequently preferred, these plants need at least six hours of strong light each day to survive.

This is true, especially in hotter climates where the plant may become stressed by the afternoon sun's intense heat.

Your succulents should not be placed in any areas that receive continuous, direct sunlight, as this could lead to burned foliage.

Remember, the elephant bush is a versatile succulent plant and can adapt to different light conditions. Just keep in mind that it prefers bright, indirect light indoors and full sun to partial shade outdoors.

Optimal Soil & Fertilizer Needs

Elephant succulents are very airy, porous, nutrient-rich well-drained soil with a pH of 5.5- 6.5; succulents require fast-draining soil that dries completely between waterings. Your soil must have a sandy texture and a low water-holding capacity, just like desert soil.  Ideally, you want to use our specialized succulent potting mix that contains 5 natural substrates to promote the development of a strong root system that helps your African elephant bush plant to thrive.

When it comes to fertilizing your elephant bush plant, it only needs a small amount of fertilizer applied once a year in spring. These succulents prefer a fertilizer with lower doses of NPK, with a maximum ratio of 5-10-5 that is higher in phosphorus than nitrogen.

Hardiness Zones & More

When it comes to growing the Elephant Bush plant indoors, the Elephant Bush prefers a cozy environment with temperatures between 65°F and 75°F. It can tolerate slightly cooler temperatures, but it's best to avoid extreme cold or frost. If you notice the leaves starting to shrivel or the tips turning brown, it may be a sign that the air is too dry. You can increase humidity by placing a tray of water near the plant or using a humidifier.

If you are living in USDA zones 9-11, you can grow your Elephant Bush plant outdoors year-round. These zones have mild temperatures and are less prone to frost.

In cooler zones, it can be kept outdoors during the summer and brought in as the temperature drops.

Elephant Bush can handle average to slightly higher humidity levels outdoors. Just make sure to provide well-draining soil to prevent waterlogged conditions, as excessive moisture can lead to root rot.

Don't worry if your succulents become too hot; they can tolerate triple-digit temperatures in the summer and prefer constant temperatures above 70 degrees Fahrenheit.

Wildlife - Portulacaria afra Attracts the Following Friendly Pollinators

Portulacaria afra have tiny, star-shaped flowers, which bloom in clusters, and are a magnet for friendly pollinators. Bees are particularly drawn to its nectar-rich blooms, while butterflies and other beneficial insects are also frequent visitors. In areas where it thrives outdoors, hummingbirds may be attracted to the vibrant blossoms as well.

Daily Drinker Warning: Great Energy, but Watch Your Teeth!
Set name: Orange Cream
No sugar which is great and this energy drink has become a staple but it is also very acidic so watch out if you have very thin teeth like me. I often find it increasing my sensitivity by a lot so a sensitivity toothpaste daily is essential for me since I drink these daily. The feeling or energy from these is great, I have been drinking similar ones like G fuel for years and this gives me significantly more energy. A quick tip though is many dollar trees have Gfuel available so if you need sugar free energy drinks like me, they provide cheaper deals - currently dollar tree has G fuel for 1.25$ a can which is quite cost effective compared to Ghost. Drinkability is mixed with Ghost, they are strong drinks. I often find G fuel being very refreshing and enjoyable while Ghost is very concentrated. Comparison - Gfuel vs. Ghost ingredients and focus Ghost: Focus - Cognitive function, energy metabolism, and premium/transparent sourcing. Caffeine - Natural from coffee beans Nootropics - Alpha-GPC, NeuroFactor™ Coffee Fruit Extract. Performance - Carnipure® L-Carnitine L-Tartrate, Taurine. What makes it unique - AstraGin® (absorption enhancer), transparent proprietary blends. Sweeteners - Sucralose, Acesulfame Potassium. Gfuel: Focus - support for focus and antioxidants. Caffeine - synthetic Nootropics - L-tyrosine and L-theanine Performance - Taurine, L-citrulline malate What makes it unique - Extensive Antioxidant Complex, high dose of Vitamins C, E, and B-vitamins. Sweeteners - Sucralose, Acesulfame Potassium. The bottom line here: G Fuel for maximum boost and vitamins; Ghost for premium, clean, and focused energy. Ghost is mostly proprietary blends of vitamins which is something to keep in mind since we do not know what is in them while G fuel is more transparent for the most part. I recommend trying both and seeing what works best for you.

Best Blue Raspberry energy drink out there!!
Set name: Blue Raspberry
I've tried multiple different brands of energy drinks that have blue raspberry as a flavor. My absolute favorite was the C4 Jolly Rancher Blue Raspberry energy drink..... UNTIL I tried this one. Beats it for sure. It has such a sweet, smooth and refreshing taste and gives a solid boost to power me through my day. The price is a little high but in all honesty it's worth the money! No crash or jitters after one of these and this is coming from someone who drinks lots of caffeine every day. TL;DR absolutely worth a try!!

Great flavor and solid energy boost
Set name: Cherry Limeade
By far my favorite flavor in any energy drink. GHOST really does this one well and the Cherry Limeade tastes great compared to a lot of other energy drinks I’ve tried. Yes, it is high in caffeine, but that’s actually what I need sometimes for a real energy boost, and this one does the job without feeling overly heavy. The calorie content is also great if you’re someone who watches calories, which I appreciate. Overall, great flavor, solid energy, and one of my go-to energy drinks.

I FINALLY found the perfect flavored water!
Flavor Name: Best Sellers Variety Pack, Size: 16 Fl Oz (Pack of 12)
I initially ran across this water b/c it was on sale at my local grocery store and it was NOT what I was expecting at all! I genuinely dislike drinking plain water regardless if it's from the tap, filtered in any way or bottled, regardless of the brand. I will only drink regular water if I absolutely have no other choice. Over many years I have tried numerous types of flavored waters (regular or carbonated), flavored electrolyte drinks, flavor packets or dissolving tablets, etc. If it's out there I've probably tried it. I am also very attached to sugar, so I didn't mind if they were heavy on the sugar/flavor profile, but I was still looking for something that was more on the pure water side as it's healthier, but also something that would quench my thirst and hydrate me instead of leaving me feeling like I needed more. I will, at times, order water w/ a lemon wedge and do have some packets that give a very light flavor of lemon or orange in comparison to everything else I listed above. For some reason these were "sufficient", but still not what I was really looking for. HINT says it all in its name. It gives you a perfect amount of infused flavor rather than syrups, powders, artificial flavoring, etc. It will definitely throw you off for a second the first time you try it b/c it truly isn't like anything else out there that I've tried and is delightfully unexpected. The first time I tried it I THOUGHT it was going to be a disappointment b/c initially I thought it tasted like regular bottled water. Where is the flavor here? But in a matter of a second I tasted the infused flavor profile and it was wonderful. I went around my house and had others try it, knowing they were expecting the same thing I did, and they too were impressed and surprised. I am still amazed at the way this water tastes and I now order by the case. Because this water is so perfectly balanced and refreshing I have almost completely stopped drinking anything else. For the past 6 weeks or so I have continued to only drink HINT (admittedly I have purchased 2-20oz bottles of soda as a treat), but I do not have any desire to drink anything else. I actually drink water now, and I can't believe I'm saying that. If you are a water drinker that wants a little bit more, I suggest this product. If you are like me and have spent decades looking for water that is flavored, but still hydrates and refreshes like regular water, look no longer. HINT is unique and bottled perfection. For people who are conscious of the planet or your body is a temple, HINT also holds a gold standard. The bottles are BPA-free, making the bottle and cap 100% recyclable. Ingredients are only purified water and natural infused flavors. And there are a lot of flavors to choose from. HINT is vegan and free of sugar, sweeteners, MSG, nuts, soy, gluten and preservatives.

⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ Refreshing flavored water with zero sugar and clean ingredients
Flavor Name: Best Sellers Variety Pack, Size: 16 Fl Oz (Pack of 12)
⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ Refreshing flavored water with zero sugar and clean ingredients I decided to try the Hint Infused Bottled Water Best Sellers Variety Pack 16 fl oz Pack of 12 because I was looking for a healthier alternative to sodas and sugary drinks. After finishing most of the pack, I can honestly say it has become one of my favorite everyday beverages. The flavors are very light and refreshing, which I personally prefer. Instead of tasting like artificial sweeteners or syrup, the water has a subtle natural fruit essence. It feels clean and crisp, making it perfect for staying hydrated throughout the day without extra sugar or calories. I also like that it contains no artificial sweeteners, zero sugar, and zero calories, which makes it a great option for people trying to reduce sugar intake or follow a healthier lifestyle. The variety pack is nice because it allows you to try several flavors and see which ones you like most. The 16 oz bottles are convenient to grab on the go, pack for work, or keep in the fridge for a quick refreshing drink. Pros • Very refreshing and light taste • Zero sugar and zero calories • No artificial sweeteners • Good variety of flavors • Convenient bottle size Cons • Flavor is very subtle (some people may prefer stronger taste) Overall, this is a great option if you want flavored water without sugar or artificial ingredients. I will definitely keep buying this variety pack to stay hydrated in a healthier way.
